Witches Abroad, by Terry Pratchett
Being a Lancashire girl, one of my favorite aspects of Witches Abroad was the “biddies on vacation” comedic interludes, in the form of Nanny Ogg writing postcards to her family about the exotic delights of foreign food and drink. One in particular caught my attention, and I knew immediately what I’d be making for this book. And while my concoction isn’t really a true daiquiri, I think Nanny’s description of a dakry is broad enough that I get to have a little fun with it. 😉
“Anywey one good thing is the drink here is v. cheap theres this one called a Bananana dakry which is basicly rum with a bananana in it. I can feel it doin me good.”
You will need:
- 8 ice cubes
- 1 lime (cut one wedge and squeeze 1 oz lime juice)
- 2 oz coconut rum
- 2 oz spiced rum
- 1 bananana
- 2 oz coconut milk
- Coconut flakes (preferably toasted)
If your coconut flakes aren’t toasted, toss a teaspoon of them into a dry skillet and toast over high heat, stirring constantly, until golden brown. Takes 2-3 minutes. Trust me, it makes enough of a difference that this step is worth doing – the difference in smell and flavor is noticeable.
Put lime juice, rum, bananana, coconut milk and ice in the blender. Pulse to break up ice cubes, and then blend until smooth. Pour into your glass.
Take your lime wedge and run it around the rim of the glass, then use as garnish. Top your dakry with your toasted coconut flakes.
