How to get over a book hangover

I take no responsibility if this doesn’t work. It’s all just for fun, and there’s tons of actually helpful guides out there for this.

What is a book hangover?

I’m bad at explaining things, and you probably already know what it is anyway. It’s similar to a book slump but not quite the same. But I thought that I should at least pretend to have a section like this cause it just makes sense for a guide like this, you know? So what can you do?

Prepare

  • Before you start that next book, make sure you have backup plans in place. Don’t just choose that one book. Choose another one you can bounce to afterwards, preferably one that is completely unrelated in tone and genre to the possible book-hangover book.
  • If possible, find a buddy that can be your designated driver. Read responsibly.
  • Different books affect different people in different ways. If you think you might get a hangover from your next book, take it slow. Sip, don’t rush.

During

  • Drink plenty of water. Hydration is important. Tea and coffee are fine.
  • Did you pick another book to bounce to during the preparation stage? Start it immediately.
  • Didn’t? No problem. Do you know anyone you can talk to? Spill your thoughts out to them about the book.
  • Don’t know anyone or feel awkward about “bothering” them? Write down your thoughts in a journal—physical or digital. Get them out of your head.
    • Include why you think the book gave you a hangover.
  • Get plenty of rest. If you had a backup book, rest after that one. If not, rest immediately. Rest is important.

After

  • Continue drinking water.
  • And getting as much rest as is possible.
  • Remember the buddy system.
  • Remember your buddy can be your own journal if that works best for you.
  • Remember it’s okay to take a break.

He/no pronouns. Book reader (sometimes even in the right order!), collector, mutilator, etc. I’m up for most anything: from Middlegrade, to YA, to Adult. Books that tend to catch my eye a bit more tend to be anything more experimental. This can be anything from using the second person POV (like in Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy), to full-blown New Weird books. I also like origami.
