Today we’re shining the speculative spotlight on Susana Imaginário, author of Wyrd Gods, an science fantasy novel entered into this year’s Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off.

Welcome to the Fantasy Inn, Susana! How are you and how have you been?

Hi! I’m well, thank you. 🙂

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what types of stories you write?

My name is Susana Imaginário, I write fantasy with a dash of irony.

Pick three books: One that is the most memorable to you as a reader, one that had the greatest influence on your writing career, and one that you just love.

Most memorable: Wuthering Heights. It was the first English book I read and it’s still one of my favourites.

Greatest influence: Probably The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N. K. Jemisin. I had no intention of publishing my work before I read it.

One that I just love: The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa. It’s an endless source of inspiration, comfort and thought provoking ideas.

How did you first fall in love with the fantasy genre?

I love stories. The fantasy genre has the best ones.

What made you want to become a writer?

I was always a writer. To become an author… now that took a series of life changing events and a lot of convincing.

Do you have any fun hobbies you’d like to share?

I spend an embarrassing amount of time playing board games with my husband.

How about a fun fact?

I teach aerial fitness and pole dancing.

Tell us about the book you entered into SPFBO this year!

Wyrd Gods is the first book in the Timelessness series. An introspective and satirical journey through a fantasy Underworld inspired by several mythologies.

Why this particular story, of all the stories you could have written?

I have no idea. It started as a writing exercise and now I have nine books plotted.

What key takeaways do you hope readers walk away from your book with?

There’s many thought provoking themes in the story but, first and foremost, the book is suppose to be entertaining.

How did you acquire the cover art for your book?

https://www.designforwriters.com/

Why did you enter SPFBO? What are you hoping to get out of the competition?

Anything, really. A review, a few sales, some publicity… I suck at marketing, so I take any help I can get.

Which do you enjoy most: outlining, drafting, or editing?

Outlining or drafting. I hate editing.

Advice you wish you could give to your earlier self when you were first starting to write?

Don’t overthink things.

What has been the best business decision you’ve made for your writing career?

To invest in a good cover and editor.

What does a typical writing day look like for you?

There’s no such thing as a typical writing day for me. I write whenever I can, wherever I can.

What are you working on right now?

The third book in the series and the first of a new series.

What other projects can we expect from you in the future?

The Dharkan (Timelessness 2) is now available for purchase!

Thank you for stopping by the Inn, Susana!

About Susana Imaginário

Susana Imaginário was born in Portugal. She moved to England to pursue a career as an aerialist and now runs a Board Gaming retreat in Ireland with her husband and their extremely spoiled dog. Her hobbies include reading, playing board games, hanging upside down, poking around ancient ruins, talking to trees and being tired. Her debut novel, Wyrd Gods, combines mythological fantasy with science fiction and satire in a schizophrenic sort of way.
