Manga Juice

The Pairing

The Vale: Behind the Vale, by Brian D. Anderson

The Reasoning

Throughout the novel, Drake obsesses over the mysterious manga juice – we’re told it’s frosty and sweet, but there are few other descriptors. Most of the time when Drake mentions it, he’s met with incredulity by the other characters. For this reason I got increasingly amused and enamored with the idea of this very masculine, grizzled protagonist enjoying a frosty mug of the girliest thing I could come up with. The fact that I happened to have a pink umbrella in my bar was just the cherry on top. 😉

The Cocktail

(Serves 2)

You will need:

  • Blender
  • Measuring Jug
  • 8 Ice Cubes
  • 4 oz Mango
  • 4 oz Strawberries
  • 4 oz Spiced Rum (Non-Alcoholic Substitute: Omit this Ingredient)
  • 4 oz Orange Juice (Non-Alcoholic Substitute: Additional 4 oz Orange Juice)
  • 2 oz Triple Sec (Non-Alcoholic Substitute: Omit this Ingredient)
  • 2 tsp Granulated Sugar

Put your mango and strawberries in the freezer for an hour before making the cocktail (optional). You can alter the amount of sugar if you have a sweet tooth, but personally I find 2 tsp to be plenty.

Put mango, 4 ice cubes, 2oz spiced rum, 1 oz triple sec, 2 oz orange juice and 1 tsp granulated sugar into the blender. Pulse to break up the cubes and then blend until smooth. Pour into your measuring jug and set aside. Rinse the blender jug.

Take your glasses and a spoon, and layer the two drinks in a way that looks pleasing to you. Garnish with your fanciest decorations!

I’m Wol, resident bartender for the Inn, and maker of fantasy themed cocktails. I’m a big advocate for quality self-published novels. In addition to reading, I enjoy videogames, cooking, gardening, geeky cross-stitch, and, more recently, D&D. Outside of fantasy I read a lot of classics and I have a fondness for noir. My favorite fantasy authors include: Robin Hobb, Philip Pullman, Liam Perrin, Terry Pratchett, Anna Smith Spark, K.S. Villoso, Josiah Bancroft and Quenby Olson.
