The Pomegranate Red

The Pairing

A Star-Reckoner’s Lot, by Darrell Drake

The Reasoning

My favorite character in the novel, a half-Div named Waray, frequently describes her rage and bloodlust as “the pomegranate red”. Waray is a complex creature, angry and violent but with a sweetness and vulnerability that I found deeply compelling.

This cocktail is dedicated to her. 🙂

The Recipe

You will need:

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Vegetable peeler/Paring knife
  • Ice cubes
  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • 2 oz pomegranate juice
  • 1 tsp pomegranate seeds
  • 4-5 drops Angostura bitters
  • 2 drops vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp honey
  • 1 small orange

Put 1 tsp pomegranate seeds into the bottom of your glass.

Fill the cocktail shaker with ice. Measure bourbon, pomegranate juice, bitters, vanilla extract and honey into the cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into glass.

Use vegetable peeler or paring knife to shave off 2 slices of peel from the orange. Fold inside of one slice over the edge of the glass and coat the rim with its oils, then twist over the cocktail so the orange oil mists the surface. Use the other slice as garnish.

Enjoy! <3

I’m Wol, resident bartender for the Inn, and maker of fantasy themed cocktails. I’m a big advocate for quality self-published novels. In addition to reading, I enjoy videogames, cooking, gardening, geeky cross-stitch, and, more recently, D&D. Outside of fantasy I read a lot of classics and I have a fondness for noir. My favorite fantasy authors include: Robin Hobb, Philip Pullman, Liam Perrin, Terry Pratchett, Anna Smith Spark, K.S. Villoso, Josiah Bancroft and Quenby Olson.
