Firebird by Juliette Cross

The cover art for Firebird by Juliette Cross. It features a woman standing with her hair blowing in the wind, arms crossed.

FIREBIRD is an enthralling romantasy taking Roman mythology and spinning it on its head. I was worried that the power dynamic between the two main character’s wasn’t going to work, but I think the author did a good job of acknowledging the uneven power/authority while allowing our main characters’ relationship to grow. I will definitely be reading the next in the series. It seems like each book will follow a different couple in this universe.

Firebird is set in the Roman empire, though the gods from mythology are actually dragons, as are the elites of society. A crazed emperor sits on the throne, terrorizing both the elites of Rome and the people they conquer. The story follows a Dacian witch as her life intertwines with a Roman dragon shifter’s. Please read if you like the following:

🐲 Historical romances with a magical twist

🐲 The grittiness (and maybe sexiness?) of a warcamp

🐲 “Fated mates” trope mixed with a little “forbidden romance” trope

🐲 Planned coups and rebellions trying to take down the crazy man in charge

Rating: 4 out of 5.
