So you might find yourself asking, what the fuck is a Klondaeg and why should I care? Klondaeg is a monster hunting dwarf bent on revenge against the monsters that killed his parents. Together with Dexter and Sinister, his talking axe with two personalities, he travels the world seeking to kill all monsters. This is all neither here nor there though because this isn’t even the first book in the series, it’s a short story that takes place between the first and second volume.
“But Sam! Why are you starting in the middle of the series?”
Because I do what I want. Also, this short story stands really well on its own and is a good introduction to Steve Thomas’ work. It gives you an idea of whether his style of humor is to your tastes or not.
So in this volume of Klondaeg’s adventures, he finds himself celebrating Fromsday with the frog people. Fromsday is essentially coconut Christmas and is a very important holiday to the frog people. So Klondaeg arrives but it seems the holiday is going to be ruined by a villainous ape. It’s up to Klondaeg to save the day and make sure the Fromsday feast goes off without a hitch!
You’re probably still wondering why you should care about Klondaeg. His adventures might be for you if you like badass dwarves who just want to beat up monsters and have cool adventures. You also might like it if you enjoy wisecracking inanimate objects. You also could just ignore me and go on with your day but you’ve made it this far so I figure you actually care about my opinion.
I liked Klondaeg because it was a refreshing break from fantasy stories that take themselves very seriously. Steve’s world is silly and over the top and it doesn’t apologize for it or try to be anything else. The characters feel like a real band of friends to me. They don’t always get along but they compliment and feed off each other and make the comedy that much better. It feels like a group of guys just going on adventures, shooting the shit, and being generally ridiculous.
I would call Klondaeg Saves Fromsday a great holiday read. I give it 4/5 stars and highly recommend you check it out. I will definitely be giving the rest of the Klondaeg books a try.
