Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri

Inspiration

Pretty much everyone at the Inn was excited about this amazing debut ever since Orbit announced that they had signed Tasha Suri, and none of us were disappointed when it arrived. It’s a gorgeous journey filled with vivid characters, and OH MY GOD, that romance! Sharade and I wept buckets.

While the Inn certainly already had reviews for this novel covered by the time I picked it up, I knew immediately that I wanted to make a cocktail. I think it might be the best one I have made!

The Recipe

You will need:

  • Tumbler
  • Small Bowl
  • Saucer
  • Ice
  • Lemon Zester/Grater
  • 1 Lime (1 wedge to rim glass, zest, 2 oz Lime Juice)
  • 2 oz Masala Syrup
  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz Triple Sec
  • 1 tbsp Kosher or Maldon Salt (Do NOT use table salt)
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 Pinch Cayenne

If you are unable to purchase masala chai syrup, you can make your own! I did, using the recipe here. I suggest adding the step of toasting your spices in the oven on a baking sheet at 350F/175C for 5 minutes before adding to the syrup mixture, just to make them extra aromatic and delicious.

In your small bowl, mix your kosher/maldon salt, chili powder, cayenne and the zest of your lime, then pour onto a saucer. Cut a wedge from the lime and swipe around half the glass rim, then dip the glass into the chili lime salt mixture to rim the tumbler. Fill the tumbler with ice, and drop the lime wedge into the glass.

Measure masala syrup, triple sec, lime juice and tequila into the tumbler. Stir and serve.

I’m Wol, resident bartender for the Inn, and maker of fantasy themed cocktails. I’m a big advocate for quality self-published novels. In addition to reading, I enjoy videogames, cooking, gardening, geeky cross-stitch, and, more recently, D&D. Outside of fantasy I read a lot of classics and I have a fondness for noir. My favorite fantasy authors include: Robin Hobb, Philip Pullman, Liam Perrin, Terry Pratchett, Anna Smith Spark, K.S. Villoso, Josiah Bancroft and Quenby Olson.

    1. Thanks Kristen! I offered a sip to Mr. Wol and he near took my hand off when I tried to take the glass back from him. I had to make a second one for myself! Definitely one of my best. 😀
