Kaleidotrope Podcast is a queer romantic comedy podcast set on a slightly magical college campus and playing around with romance tropes, particularly fanfiction tropes.
The plot centers around Drew and Harrison, two reluctant college radio co-hosts-turned-accidental-advice-givers who find themselves in the middle of the campus’s oldest mystery: Do happy endings really happen at Sidlesmith? Can you really find your trope?
And if the magic isn’t real, what does that mean for two polar opposites who find themselves falling for each other twice a week for half an hour on a suddenly popular radio show?
There’s honestly not much I can say about the plot that isn’t already covered in the summary above. That said, this is not a story that you listen to for the plot.
Kaleidotrope is a romance story with just a little bit of comedy sprinkled in. The heart of the show is the budding friendship (and possibly romance?) between radio co-hosts Drew and Harrison. These guys have a lot of personality and an instant chemistry with each other that catapults their radio show into the spotlight at Sidlesmith.
Each episode follows a new radio show, where Harridrew (their official “ship” name by fans) gives out love advice to the students of Sidlesmith. Since Sidlesmith is legendary for having the magical ability to make your romance dreams come true, many of the students find themselves falling into classic romance fan-fiction tropes.
I’ll admit that I’ve never actually read any romance fan-fiction, but no prior knowledge is needed. It’s easy enough to appreciate the ridiculous situations would-be lovers find themselves in, from faking complicated relationships to accidentally ingesting truth potions.
If this story doesn’t have you smiling goofily and rooting for everyone in the story to end up in a happy relationship, then shame upon you! Shame, I say.
