Kopratic’s 2017 Reading Year

intro

I’ve gone through and looked at all of the books I read in 2017. Then I made some stats. Overall, 2017 was a pretty good reading year. I read 122 books (including around 12 graphic novels), coming in at about a total of 39,201 pages. My average rating is about 3.8-3.9, which I’d say is very good. My most read author was definitely Catherynne M. Valente, having read 23 of her books this year. My most read genre was fantasy, which will be broken up further into subgenres below.

gender breakdown

In 2017, I read 83 unique authors. Counting each author only once, there were 49 male (59%) and 34 female (41%). Taking into account the same author more than once (if I read more than one of their books), there were 65 male (53%) and 57 female (47%).

Unique Gender

Nonunique Gender

For 2018, I want to try and even things out more and read just as many individual female authors as individual male authors, if not more.

author country of origin breakdown

2017 had me reading from 16 different countries. The most, by far, was the US.

Author Country of Origin

While I’m happy to have read from a variety of places, I want to expand my horizons more in 2018. For me that means reading more books by non-US authors.

POC vs Non-POC

Out of the 83 authors I read, 67 (81%) were non-POC authors and 16 (19%) were POC authors.

POC vs NonPOC

For 2018, I want to make a conscious effort to read more books from POC authors.

subgenre breakdown

As I mentioned earlier, fantasy was my most read genre. I also read some literary fiction, which I’ve also included in the chart below. I went mainly with gut instinct for these 32 individual labels. Each book was given a label based on what I personally felt was the most prevalent subgenre.

Subgenres

I’m pretty happy with these results. Again, in 2018 I hope to broaden my horizons more.

series vs standalones

I read more standalones than series, at 67 (55%). 26 (21%) books were first in series, and 29 (24%) were sequels.

Series vs Standalones

I would like to try and keep these numbers roughly the same in 2018. I’d also like to catch up on any ongoing series I’ve started.

overall

Overall, I think 2017 was very good. There are a few things I’d like to change for my 2018 reading year, and I think they are definitely achievable goals. Let’s hope 2018 brings success!

Author: Kopratic

He/no pronouns. Book reader (sometimes even in the right order!), collector, mutilator, etc. I’m up for most anything: from Middlegrade, to YA, to Adult. Books that tend to catch my eye a bit more tend to be anything more experimental. This can be anything from using the second person POV (like in Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy), to full-blown New Weird books. I also like origami.
